Silicone rubber is well known for compatibility with weathering, aging as
well as resistance to ozone degradation. The ability of silicone to be used
over an extended range of temperatures makes it a material of choice for use
in environments with thermal variation. The mechanical properties of
silicone are not as good when compared with those of other elastomeric
materials used in sealing. The food and pharmaceutical industries make use
of silicone materials extensively due to their physiologically harmless
characteristics. Standard silicones have good resistance to fats and plant
and animal oils, oils used in transmission and also water up to a
temperature of 100 degrees Celsius.
Applications of silicone o-rings can be found in fuel injection ports, where
high thermal environment is to be expected. Silicone is characterised by
poor resistance to tear and abrasion. Tensile strength is also low as
compared to some other elastomers.
